With Manchester United and Leicester, both starting the matchday a point behind the Blues, to play later in the week it was imperative Chelsea picked up three points to guarantee the pair could not leapfrog them - and a dominant display in west London deserved more than the narrow margin of victory.
Christian Pulisic saw a shot on the turn palmed onto the bar by Tim Krul while Giroud missed a number of first-half chances before scoring the only goal, while after the break Pulisic and Willian were both denied, but Chelsea saw out victory relatively comfortably to move four points clear, for now at least, in third.
Man of the match: Olivier Giroud. Norwich have rarely been seen without Teemu Pukki and Emi Buendia this season but their absence was not the only alteration from Daniel Farke, whose usually expansive side set up to frustrate their hosts from the off and avoid some unwanted history by losing an eighth consecutive league game for the first time.
It was testament to their efforts that it took Chelsea 20 minutes to carve out a chance of note from a moment of Jorginho quality, as his lofted ball was volleyed straight at Krul by Giroud under pressure from Ben Godfrey.
Chelsea made five changes from the side beaten at Sheffield United, including a return for Olivier Giroud and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to the starting line-up.
That would not be the only chance he passed up. The Frenchman scuffed Cesar Azpilicueta's pull-back high and wide before failing to connect with Ruben Loftus-Cheek's flick, while Kurt Zouma flashed a free header wide from a corner.
Giroud's first-half header the difference and it's an important three points towards qualifying for next season's Champions League group stages.
Giroud now makes way for Abraham. Giroud, despite scoring Chelsea's goal tonight, has been largely disappointing. James fizzes in a low cross moments after Abraham's introduction but the striker can't get to the ball to direct it home.
Should Norwich get back into this then it would be a travesty for Chelsea who have made life awkward for themselves here having missed chances to seal the points.
Two strikers coming on for them. Idah and Pukki on for Hernandez and Drmic. Stiepermann is on for Tettey. Looks like Farke is going all out, finally.
The right back's ball loops over the head of Godfrey but Giroud can't direct a header towards goal. Second half drinks break now with us, too.
They've had 38 per cent possession this half compared with 28 in the first. The trouble is they don't look much more dangerous with the extra 10 per cent.
Chelsea remain in control and Azpilicueta has just shot over. The Brazilian turns towards goal, unleashes a right-footed effort which deflects off the back of Lewis and over the Norwich goal.
The resulting corner comes to nothing. Finally, Chelsea are ahead. Just as I was writing how badly Chelsea have done in taking their chances for the half-time summary, Giroud goes and puts the record straight.
After missing two decent chances to score earlier in the half, the France striker scores his sixth Premier League goal of the season.
Pulisic supplied the cross and Giroud outmuscled Timm Klose to head past Krul. As the ball bounced in the Norwich area, Giroud found space but the ball wasn't fully under control and all he could do was produce a tame effort that barely reached the six-yard area.
The Frenchman screamed in frustration and rightly so. Norwich defending desperately but so far have kept the scoreline level as Krul makes a brilliant save to tip over a shot by Pulisic, who shot on the turn, before Zouma shoots wide following another corner.
The striker angles his body to shoot, sends a right boot at the ball but somehow manages to double kick it, sending a shot off target.
A great chance there for Chelsea, who continue to dominate possession. Seems as though he may have injured himself while playing a long pass forward.
He looks to be ok now but if he has to go off then Norwich's route to Chelsea's goal will become even more difficult.
Meanwhile, Chelsea continue to persist with a patient style which you'd assume they'll have to ditch should it still be late into the second half.
A couple of times now Chelsea have made it to the outside of Norwich's area before those moves broke down. They're struggling to string together the correct passes to get closer to the Norwich goal.
Alonso, perhaps a little frustrated, has just attempted a shot from just to the left of the Norwich area but that went out for a goal kick.
Instead, Norwich have had to launch the ball long and hope Chelsea's defenders slip up. That hasn't happened so far and Chelsea continue to come forward in packs.
Alonso and Azpilicueta both providing excellent options on the flanks although Giroud wasn't quick enough just now to get into the Norwich six-yard area to convert a cross by the left back.
First chance falls to Loftus-Cheek who heads wide following Azpiliceuta's cross from the right.
